Towards the end of the nineteenth century the small island of Saint-Pierre is the stage for a murder and one of the islanders, Neel Auguste, is duly found guilty. Saint Pierre however has no guillotine and one must be ordered from the mainland. While the small community waits, Neel is put in the custody of the captain and his wife, Madame La, who becomes convinced that the condemned man is capable of redemption. La Veuve De Saint Pierre is an elegant tale of love, honour and bigotry, played out with a tad too much sobriety.
