Plot

The Year is 1875 and sergeant, Carmelo Mendiluze, is fighting at Biscay when he learns of the arrival of a soldier from his neighbouring village. Carmelo befriends Manuel and teaches him the art of survival, but Manuel commits an act of cowardice that results in tragedy. Many years later and the two men's families still harbour feelings of intense dislike but their skill at logging and the burgeoning relationships between sons and daughters will seal the families together far into the future. Vacas covers three generations in an intense observation of relationships both positive and negative. This film was director Julio Medem's debut feature and the winner of a number of awards.
