MADE IN HONG KONG (1997)
FRUIT CHAN
Plot
Wing lives in the intense human chaos that is modern day Hong Kong, scraping a living as an errand boy for the local Triad kingpin. When Wing meets Ping, the young daughter of one of his boss's debtors, he falls in love (much to the disgust of her mother). Made In Hong Kong is an amazing piece of cinema, frantic, hip, humorous, tragic but poetic in it's inevitability. The central characters don't require our empathy or support, but we are with them nonetheless, the camera work is erratic and atmospheric, with a number of scenes that manage to combine fear, desperation and brutality with almost farcical humor. Made In Hong Kong is exhilarating in its simplicity and style. Utterly hypnotic.
