When US pilot Colenel Joseph Ryan is shot down he finds himself interned at a German prisoner camp in Italy. At first Ryan finds himself loathed by his fellow prisoners for his seemingly cowardly attitude to the Germans, but it is not too long before the American shows his true colours and leads the men in a daring escape and a race for the Swiss border.
