Plot

One of the best adaptations of Stanley Houghton's famous play, Hindle Wakes is the story of a respectable working class girl, Fanny Hawthorn, who has a fling with a young man thought to be her social superior. The fact that she treats the whole relationship as a bit of fun was thought shocking at the time the play was written and performed - such shows of carefree sexual abandon were a male preserve. As a late silent film Hindle Wakes looks superb, which is testament to the technical maturity of the medium before the advent of sound - the location scenes in Blackpool, some of which were shot at night, highlight this mastery, and provide the work with a poignant sense of period!
