Gorchakov is a Russian poet doing research in a small Tuscan village in Italy. While there he is haunted by memories of his homeland and his family, all the while bombarded by beatific and symbolic images of the world in which he now finds himself. Nostalgia was Tarkovsky's first film outside Russia and is stunningly beautiful, and though I suspect much of its deeper intent escaped the feeble mind of this reviewer it is nonetheless breathtaking.
