How was it that in the space of less than a century the people who thought of themselves as the freest in the world ended up subjugating so much of it?. This is the question Schama attempts to tackle in the 10th episode of the series; ‘The Wrong Empire' begins with the unease that resulted in the ‘Boston Tea Party' and moves on to look at the disintegration of the American empire and acquizition of an Indian one. In the 11th episode he examines the role of the English radicals at the time of the French revolution and after up to their one crowning achievement, the abolition of slavery. In the 12th episode he examines the role of a new breed of women in the Victorian age.
