DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD (2002)
CALLIE KHOURI
Cast
Plot
An adaptation of the successful book, this is a quirky and entertaining look at mother-daughter relationships and the resons that they turn out the way that they do. Sidda is a well respected playwright but when a simple interview reveals a little too much about her mother, all hell breaks loose between the two. The only folks up to the job of salvaging the relationship are three of her mother's nearest and dearest, three ol' Southern gals known as the 'Ya-yas', who kidnap Sidda in an attempt to tell her the undistorted truth about her mother. Bullock is watchable as ever, while Ashley Judd and Ellen Burstyn take turns portraying her idiosyncratic mother (in the 60s and the 90s respectively) . Although, destined for 'chick flick' status, Divine Secrets is thoroughly enjoyable watch, rife with Southern humour and charming dialogue, which unfortunatlely does melt into cheese on occassion.
