THE MAN OF THE YEAR (2004)
JOSé HENRIQUE FONSECA
Plot
Maiquel lives in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, a brutal place where life is not so much cheap as worthless. He has simple dreams, a life far removed from his present surroundings, but when he inadvertently kills the local spiv he takes on heroic status within the neighbourhood, and, with events well and truly out of his hands, he, rather surreally, becomes a freelance hit man. The Man Of The Year has many unavoidable similarities to the City Of God, the setting, the complacent brutality, the struggle to escape and the super slick editing, but unlike that seminal Brazilian movie this at its heart is a satire. Powerful, mad stuff.
