THE ICEMAN COMETH (1973)
JOHN FRANKENHEIMER
Plot
A meticulously faithful adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's stage play, the story unfolds around a bar populated by every aspect of American underclass, alcoholics and misfits one and all, only their dreams and increasingly illusive aspirations provide tenuous solace, but the arrival of Hickey on one of his infamous benders causes the rude interruption of such fantasy and the harsh intrusion of reality. The Iceman Cometh is a genre defining observational drama, every aspect of the film is close to perfection, and there can be few movies of its type, even 12 Angry Men, that stand favourably in the glare of comparison.
