THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BED (2002)

EMILIO MARTINEZ LAZARO

Plot

A bizarre romantic musical that attempts to address the moral maze surrounding modern liberal relationships. Two couples break up and make up, swap partners and generally have a good time all round as they sing and (ulp!) dance their way through the best part of two hours. The music is okay, trying to modernise the genre with nods towards hip hop and modish balladeering but for most of the time, it seems a little incongruous with the overall realist 'indie' approach. The central premise of the piece seems to be positing that we are all bisexual by nature, but the homosexual aspect of this two sided coin is not addressed in any way fully enough to justify its tokenistic conclusion. It's lightweight, at times humourous, and the pretty cast make it easy watching. But don't expect any revelations or original insight into the mysteries of relationships in a post-binary gender world...
