THE NEXT OF KIN (1942)
THORALD DICKINSON
Plot
An assault team of crack British Commandos are sent on a risky mission to sabotage a Nazi port within occupied France, but a spy has discovered their plans and the Germans are awaiting their arrival with tragic consequences. Made in 1941 by Ealing Studios The Next Of Kin is a remarkable film in that it portrays Allied defeat, rather than glorious victory, and it does so in a gritty and believable manner. At first horrified by the potentially detrimental effect on national morale, Churchill contemplated getting the film banned, but eventually deemed the movie a necessary evil in the hidden battle against Nazi espionage. A stirring war time movie that transcends its original propaganda message.
