TRANSAMERICA (2005)
DUNCAN TUCKER
Plot
Bree is a remarkable woman, and only part of this is her birth identity as a male and her near-ending struggle to become a physical woman. As if Bree's life was not complicated enough she discovers she has a troubled teenage son and is reluctantly persuaded to travel to New York and bail him out of jail. So begins an odyssey for the unlikely duo as they travel back across country to Los Angeles, each keeping their secrets closely guarded but each also drawn increasingly towards the other. Witty, poignant, perceptive and intelligent, TransAmerica is a quirky understated delight driven by a sparkling script and a performance by Huffman (as a woman playing a man playing a woman) that makes the casting director look like a genius.
