THE SUN ALSO RISES (1957)
HENRY KING
Plot
A lifeless adaptation of Hemingway's novel about the expats who hung out in Paris after WWI. Singer/actress Greco's prostitute is a scene-stealer, Gardner is stunning as the lubricious aristo whom the impotent Power falls for, and Flynn - in his penultimate screen role - is delightfully self-mocking. Both cast and crew, Ernest Hemingway, Tyrone Power and Ava Gardner included, attempted to have Robert Evans fired during production but producer Darryl F Zanuck refused, saying, "The kid stays in the picture," thus leading to both Evans' long career as a producer and the title of his fascinating autobiography.
