MUSIC AND LYRICS (2007)
MARC LAWRENCE
Plot
In the 1980s Alex Fletcher was at the top of the charts but when his Wham-esque band split he quietly drifts into anonymity. Decades later Alex's music' is rediscovered by the latest teen pop sensation and she requests he write her a song, and with the help of the young woman who waters his plants, that's exactly what he does. The tunes are truly excruciating, whether done as pastiche or in saccharine earnest, and Hugh Grant's got as much rhythm as a beached starfish being kicked across the pebbles by a bored three-year-old; but Music and Lyrics relies, as all such films usually do, on how much you like the two leads and there is some genuine wit jammed in alongside the romantic comedy formula.
