Plot

The story begins in Sicily at the start of the 20th century. Salvatore, a poor farmer, and a widower, decides to immigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother, but before embarking they meet Lucy, purportedly a British lady who merely wishes to return to the States. Lucy is looking to marry before her arrival at Ellis Island and Salvatore honourably agrees; but on arrival at New York's gates to the ‘new world' the stringent exams for entrance to the US proves an immense and frightening hurdle for the innocently naive Sicilians. Nominated for numerous awards ‘The Golden Door' is a beautifully observed and performed drama.
