While on his way home, the wealthy Parisian Mr. Hervey reflects on the sturdiness and success of his life and the fortress of security he has built around himself. It is not long before this smug satisfaction is rudely shattered when he discovers a letter from his wife, Gabrielle. The contents of the message plunges Hervey into the previously unknown sensations of vulnerability, abandonment and betrayal; But when a remorseful Gabrielle unexpectedly returns, the scene is set for bitter recrimination and revelation, a scenario from which there will be no return.
