MEET JOHN DOE (1941)
FRANK CAPRA
Plot
When sacked journalist Ann Mitchell sends a fictitious letter from an unemployed man named "John Doe" announcing he will throw himself from the City Hall in protest at the corruption and hypocrisy he sees all around him, she unwittingly fires the American imagination. Re-employed by her editor Mitchell must now find someone prepared to go through with her creation's pledge. Meet John Doe is often held to be part of a thematic trilogy that includes Mister Deeds Goes To Town and Mister Smith Goes To Washington, exploring a recurring notion in Capra's work, that of the universal everyman exploited by a corrupt and powerful establishment.
