A retired legal counsellor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior, both of which still haunt him decades later. The central performance by Ricardo Darin is a highlight of the film, counterbalancing its dark plot of catharsis and revenge with a beguiling warmth and humanity. Winner of the 2010 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, beating stiff, and arguably superior, competition from Haneke’s ‘The White Ribbon’ and Audiard’s ‘A Prophet’, 'The Secret in Their Eyes' is a highly intelligent noirish thriller set against the backdrop of a corrupt, repressive Argentinian state.
