Down on his heels Fergus returns to his native Liverpool for the funeral of his childhood friend Frankie, a fellow private security contractor who has been killed on 'Route Irish', the deadly stretch of road between Baghdad airport and the Green Zone. Suspicions aroused, Fergie sets off on an investigation of what really happened. Ken Loachs absorbing 'conspiracy thriller' is better as an observation of post-traumatic problems facing the soldiers working for the Wests ever expanding private army than as a portrait of the moral and political corruption at play in Iraq.
