Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door. However, despite the fact that Boyle’s only real interest in Everett is to mock his uptight professionalism, even his apathy can’t keep the situation from dragging him in. The Guard may not be the most original plot but the script, and in-particular Gleeson’s eccentric copper are a side splitting joy. This compares very favourably with the excellent ‘In Bruges’.
