Leigh's first film superbly predates 'Nuts In May', 'Abigail's Party' and 'High Hopes'. A tongue-tied schoolteacher, a sherry drinking spinster and a would-be guitarist are the main characters, living absurd and desperate lives against a bleak suburban background. Harrowing and, of course, very black.
