SEBASTIANE (1976)
DEREK JARMANPAUL HUMFRESS
Plot
Derek Jarman's shock-horror-outrage account of the life of Saint Sebastiane who, according to the controversial director, was gay. Sebastian is played as a Roman soldier, posted to the back of beyond with a small platoon of bored colleagues, who gets selfishly absorbed in his own mysticism and then picked on by his emotionally crippled captain. This was the first offering in Channel 4's ever so tempting "red triangle" season, and is, in fact, a powerful, visually stunning and sensitively made tragedy.
