GREAT EXPECTATIONS (BBC) PART 1 (1991)
JULIAN AMYES
Plot
A tremendous adaptation of Dickens' tale of lost innocence and a recurrence of his theme that the working classes of industrial Britain were destined to remain poor and ill-educated due to deliberate subjugation by the landed gentry. The portrayal of young Pip's rise under the watchful eye of a mysterious benefactor is interspersed with the oddly gothic imagery that Dickens evoked to portray the world of the poor and disenfranchised. Sometimes a little slow, but overall a satisfyingly detailed adaptation that includes many nuances of Dickens' original text.
