Tarkovsky's extraordinary montage of images that attempt to reflect both his own upbringing, and the history of his native Soviet Union. He uses an intercut series of semi-documentary pieces, mixed with occasional poetic narrative (courtesy of his father!). A remarkably vivid and personal film.
