The hippies. Lots of people dropped acid and gathered in SF, a new music form was born and the suits from the record companies got their drinks spiked. Over on our side of The Pond the Beatles, Pink Floyd et al joined in and then we got "turned on" to to Ravi Shankar and folk music broke through to the mainstream.
