Inspector Morse becomes personally involved when called to investigate the apparent suicide of an elderly Oxford don. The dead man's wife is Susan, to whom Morse was once engaged. When the case turns into a possible murder enquiry, Sergeant Lewis becomes increasingly worried that Morse's emotions are clouding his judgement.
