GUMMO (1997)
HARMONY KORINE
Plot
Experimental, low-budget directorial debut from the writer of "Kids". Set in and around the Deep South town of Xenia, "Gummo" is basically a plotless series of voyeuristic vignettes detailing the tawdry antics of its white trash inhabitants. Highlights include a pair of in-bred losers hunting down cats to sell on for a dollar a shot, the director himself attempting to seduce a huge-headed black dwarf, and a local pimp who rents out his Downs Syndrome sister, all set to a brain-numbing death metal soundtrack. Is Korine a genius of modern movie-making, or just a pretentious git with delusions of grandeur? The jury's still out.
