Adaptation of Jane Smiley's Pulitzer Prize-winning feminist reworking of King Lear. A crusty, cantankerous old patriarch announces he intends to leave his land between his three daughters: Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Jason Leigh, but when the youngest and favourite, Leigh, questions his decision, he cuts her off and out of his life. The performances all round are excellent, but the heavily laboured "wimmin"-orientation becomes tedious to say the least.
