BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN (1998)
ALAN SMITHEE
Plot
Ambitious comedy attempting to parody the Hollywood machine which, in a joyfully ironic twist, merely succeeds in falling foul of the Tinseltown politics it's taking a swipe at. Eric Idle plays movie-maker Alan Smithee, - not-so-proud owner of the moniker directors use when they're too ashamed to put their own name to a film. Pronouncing his latest film to be "total shit", Smithee destroys the celluloid, incurring the wrath of his producers and landing himself in a lunatic asylum. Which would be all very well if it was funny. It's not. So not funny, in fact, that the real director had his name replaced with, you guessed it, Alan Smithee.
