BABYMOTHER (1998)
JULIAN HENRIQUE
Plot
Set against a backdrop of the North London dancehall scene, this is the story of ragga girl Neeta and her girlfriends, who dream of making the big time with their all-girl crew. But Neeta is "babymother" to elusive dreadhead Byron's two young children, and it's a long way from her high-rise council flat to the bright lights of fame and fortune. The social commentary bit is pretty standard, but its portrayal of the grassroots dub scene and its all-important dress code is spot on. All set to a thumping reggae soundtrack featuring the likes of underground dancehall diva Carroll Thompson.
