Plot

Award-winning directorial debut, set on the Sea Islands off Georgia at the turn of the century. The younger members of a Gullah family - descendants of African slaves - are about to leave matriarch Nana and migrate to the mainland. As they gather together for a last supper, they are rejoined by family members Viola - a missionary, and Yellow Mary - a prostitute. As tensions and apprehensions rise amongst the clan, their collective stories unravel. A thoughtful tale of tradition and its importance, steeped in superstition and symbolism.
