Plot
An audaciously accomplished directorial debut from writer and leading man Vincent Gallo. Recently released from prison for a crime he didn't commit, Billy Brown (Gallo) decides to head for the family homestead, where his parents believe their son's been away building a brilliant career. In order to keep up the pretence the socially inept loner needs a girlfriend, so he kidnaps one - Layla - and marches her back to meet his dysfunctional folks. What follows is a brilliantly cringeworthy portrait of dark domesticity, with flashbacks to Billy's bleak childhood. Meanwhile, Layla is falling in love. Not mainstream fare by any means, but a truely excellent American indie.
