A seemingly low-key female buddy drama which develops into something altogether darker. 20-years-old drifter Isa turns up penniless in Lille and meets Marie, a sullen seamstress, and together they share a flat left empty by a hospitalised teenage girl. However their friendship starts to drift when Marie falls for a wealthy young nightclub owner, while Isa finds and reads the comatose teenager's diary and feels compelled to visit her. Gradually, the friends' separate obsessions are leading towards a terrible conclusion. The pair became joint winners of the Best Actress award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Gripping.
