LE BOUCHER (1970)
CLAUDE CHABROL
Plot
Probably Chabrol's finest film, superbly scripted by the man himself and featuring two excellent performances by leads Audran and Yanne. Popaul is a soldier, just returned from combat to rejoin the family butchery business. At a friend's wedding he meets Helene, and the two are drawn to each other, but Helene has been hurt before and resists beginning an affair. Days later, the murdered body of a young girl is found in the town. When Helene stumbles across another victim, plus a piece of damning evidence, she begins to suspect her would-be lover. Enthralling and atmospheric.
