A LA PLACE DU COEUR (2007)

ROBERT GUEDIGUIAN

Plot

A French adaptation of James Baldwin's novel "If Beale Street Could Talk", from the director of "Marius et Jeannette". The New York setting is swapped for Marseilles, where Bebe, an 18 year old black guy, is in prison after being wrongfully accused - by a racist policeman - of raping a young Bosnian woman who has since fled. Bebe's fiancee Clim, who's sixteen and white, is pregnant, and there's little money for Bebe's defence, but Clim's mum Marianne travels to Sarajevo to track down the alleged victim in an effort to clear her son's name. A thoughtful study of the pressures on young people, which include more than just racism.
