MIFUNE (1998)

SOREN KRAGH-JACOBSEN

Plot

Third in the series of Dogme films, Mifune is perhaps the most approachable of all of them. Whether you thought 'Idiots' was the best thing since sliced bread or the worst thing since sliced bread (depending obviously on where you stand in the never-ending 'sliced bread, a good idea or a bloody awful idea' debate) this film should appeal to you. The story follows Kresten, a man who has escaped his wildly dysfunctional family only to find that the death of his father leaves him with no option but to return to the childhood home he has tried so hard to forget. The collapsing family farm is no less insane than he remembers it, and matters are complicated further by the new housekeeper, her teenage son, and Kresten's own increasingly disgruntled new wife. The film is quite simply a joy, it looks stunning and has a wit, characterisation, and beautifully off-kilter observation, that should shame many a director/writer into looking for alternative employment.
