It is the height of the Second World War and twelve-year-old Ivan has lost his entire family to the Nazis, sworn to avenging their deaths he joins a Russian partisan regiment and later an army unit as a scout. The non-linear storyline follows his increasingly perilous missions through the forbidden lines and contrasts his childhood against the reality of life on the Eastern Front.
