THE CROUPIER (1999)
MIKE HODGES
Plot
Jack is a writer who just can't find a subject to write about; In need of some cash flow he takes a job as a croupier at a London casino and quickly finds himself hypnotised by the people who inhabit this dark and shifty world; Jack has found his subject. The Croupier is a brooding, hard edged, thriller, reminiscent of Mike Hodges 'Get Carter' in its sparse style, with an 'I couldn't be cooler if you shoved me in a freezer' hero and three slightly two-dimensional female characters. This is not as tough or mesmerising as that seminal British gangster flick, but in the hear and now it's a classy affair.
